The Bells of St Mungo (2025)

Pipe Band

The title of this piece refers to the patron saint of Glasgow and also alludes to a variety of chime sounds produced within the music, whether it be the gong-like pedal chords of the piano at the start and at points throughout, or the carillon-like pipe melody in the fast 6/8 section. Generally, the piece was written to convey the harmonic possibilities in using pipes in tandem with a range of colourful chords, including some canonic writing on the opening melody, which is also developed throughout the piece like a leitmotif.
